As the injectors wear, the opening pressures get out-of-whack. As a result, timing changes and IQ changes. Inside the engine, fuel is not being delivered at the optimum time, reduces fuel economy, power, and can produce more smoke. As the nozzles themselves wear out, the spray pattern will degrade and further reduce economy. I think a pop test is a good idea every 100,000 miles of service.
